Travelers heading through northern Italy at the beginning of October should prepare for significant rail disruptions in Lombardy. From 00:01 on Friday, October 3, until 03:00 on Monday, October 6, trains will not operate between Premosello and Arona. A further suspension is planned between Arona and Gallarate starting at 16:30 on Saturday, October 4, and lasting until the same end time on Monday morning. Passengers planning weekend trips in the region should consider how these closures might affect their itineraries.

The closures coincide with a busy autumn travel period and may affect weekend trips. Travelers should take note of the following:

  • Access to the lakes region and routes north of Milan could be disrupted.
  • Both sections of the railway will be completely halted, impacting weekend journeys.
  • Passengers may need to plan alternative routes or adjust their schedules.
  • Travel times may increase and the ability to adjust plans could be limited.

The works are part of preparations for the European Rail Traffic Management System. Infrastructure upgrades include the renewal of track sections and the replacement of switches at Sesto Calende station during the night of October 3 and 4. The project represents an investment of around 120 million euros, partly supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. These improvements aim to make regional services more reliable and efficient once the system becomes fully operational.

For visitors, the closures could make access to well known destinations more complicated. Access to key destinations for visitors, including the Rocca Borromea di Arona fortress with its views over Lake Maggiore, the monumental Statue of San Carlo Borromeo, and the Toce Waterfall close to Premosello, may be limited while the train services are temporarily suspended. Visitors are advised to consider these closures when planning their itineraries to prevent unexpected delays or interruptions during their trips.

Travelers and commuters may face short term disruptions, but planning ahead can reduce delays. The planned rail improvements and the rollout of ERTMS are set to make schedules more reliable, journeys smoother, and overall service across Lombardy more efficient. People visiting lakeside spots, lookout points, or walking trails, as well as those commuting daily, should notice smoother and more reliable travel once the upgrades are complete. Passengers are encouraged to check timetables, plan alternative routes, and allow extra time to ensure smoother trips throughout the suspension period.
