On October 15, 2025, La Spezia is expected to face serious interruptions across its public transport network. The CUB Trasporti union has announced a 24-hour strike by city bus drivers, which is expected to cause delays and a reduction in the number of available services. The protest is the result of failed negotiations with ATC, the municipal transport operator, after many years without a collective agreement update. The union says employees continue to work under outdated conditions dating back to 1997, with low pay, staff shortages, and an aging fleet.

Talks between CUB Trasporti and ATC ended unsuccessfully in August after two failed mediation attempts at the La Spezia Prefecture. According to union representatives, workers have reached the end of their tether after years of broken promises and minimal investment in the city's transport network. Union members describe the transport system as poorly managed, citing frequent delays, canceled routes, and recurring mechanical failures that weaken overall service reliability.

The strike is projected to heavily impact bus operations throughout the city. Services will be limited to the legally mandated morning and evening rush hours, and most daytime routes will be suspended. Passengers planning to travel between La Spezia, Cinque Terre, Portovenere, or neighboring coastal towns should expect delays and reduced service, so it is important to plan your trip carefully to avoid missed connections.

Demand for alternative transport services is expected to increase throughout the strike period. Travelers might opt for trains, ferries, or taxis, though these alternatives could be busy and lead to longer wait times. Travelers should check timetables ahead of time, allow extra minutes for transfers, and use walking or cycling for shorter city routes when possible. Strong coordination between different transport providers will be crucial to minimize travel disruptions for passengers.

The upcoming strike highlights the ongoing difficulties faced by Italy's regional public transport system. It draws attention to persistent issues that continue to impact both public transport employees and passengers. Aging infrastructure struggles to meet the growing demands and pace of modern transport systems. For travelers visiting or passing through La Spezia, this highlights how strikes can quickly disrupt everyday travel plans. When arranging your trip, remember to check local transport updates and stay informed about possible service delays or disruptions.
