Starting October 27, KLM will replace Delta Air Lines on the Amsterdam to Portland route for the winter schedule. This change comes as part of the transatlantic joint venture between KLM, Delta, and Air France, with the Dutch carrier taking over the route from its American counterpart. KLM's service will run three times weekly, compared to Delta's previous daily schedule, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft instead of Delta's Airbus A330-300.

KLM and Delta, both members of the SkyTeam alliance, have a long-standing relationship, which includes the coordination of their transatlantic flights. This winter, they will collectively serve 18 US airports non-stop from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

This switch to KLM is expected to reduce the total number of available seats by 58% due to fewer flights and a smaller aircraft. This strategy aims to increase yields and load factors during the off-peak season, providing a more sustainable and profitable operation.

KLM and Delta have made several changes to their Amsterdam-US network over the years. Routes to cities like Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Memphis, and Newark have been discontinued by Delta, while KLM has also ceased operations to Dallas/Fort Worth and Newark. The adjustment of the Amsterdam to Portland route aligns with their ongoing strategy to optimize their transatlantic operations based on seasonal demand and market conditions.

Regular business travelers, who prioritize reliability and efficiency, will find this strategic move beneficial, as it aims to balance capacity with demand, ensuring better load factors and potentially fewer disruptions. Additionally, the change will be closely monitored by travel managers to ensure that it aligns with corporate travel policies and offers the necessary flexibility and support.

As the winter schedule begins, travelers can expect KLM's renowned service on the Amsterdam to Portland route, contributing to the robust connectivity between Europe and the United States.
