A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plane had to make an emergency return to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Wednesday after encountering a problem with the aircraft’s air conditioning system. The flight, operated by Global X, took off from Mesa and was bound for Alexandria Airport in Louisiana when the issue with the air conditioning unit was detected, causing severe heat discomfort for those onboard.

According to Mesa Gateway Communications Director Ryan Smith, the malfunction quickly affected cabin conditions, leading to the emergency return. As a result of the faulty AC, eleven passengers aboard the plane experienced heat-related illnesses, which required immediate medical attention. Upon landing, the affected passengers were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, they are reported to be in stable condition.

The ICE-chartered flight was operated by Global X, a Miami-based airline that specializes in charter services. Global X has a base at Mesa Gateway Airport and runs multiple flights per week to various destinations, including locations across the United States. The flight was part of the regular operations transporting individuals under the custody of ICE.

The incident is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the air conditioning failure. The aircraft will undergo a thorough inspection to ensure the safety of future flights. Smith noted that passenger safety remains a top priority for both the airline and the airport, and such technical malfunctions are taken very seriously.

This is not the first time technical issues have forced emergency landings, though such incidents involving heat-related illnesses are rare. The quick response from Mesa Gateway Airport and local medical teams ensured that the situation was managed effectively, minimizing any long-term health impacts for the passengers.

Global X and Mesa Gateway Airport have not yet released additional details regarding the timeline for when flights will resume or if this will affect future ICE-chartered operations. Passengers traveling on similar routes are advised to check for updates and potential delays as safety protocols are thoroughly reviewed.
