Hidden Costs in Travel and How Booking Websites Charge You More

A recent market analysis by Ryanair has revealed that some online travel agencies (OTAs), including eDreams, Vola, and Booking.com, apply significant markups on airline services. These platforms have been found to charge up to 220% more for seat reservations, luggage fees, and even standard airfares compared to direct airline prices. For example, Vola listed a reserved seat for €15.99, whereas the same seat was available on Ryanair’s website for just €5.00. Similarly, eDreams priced a 10kg checked bag at €32.29, more than double Ryanair's €14.29. These discrepancies raise concerns about the transparency of pricing structures within third-party booking platforms.

Data from the March 2025 survey also highlights that Booking.com inflates prices on other airlines. A seat on an easyJet flight, which costs £7.49 when booked directly through the airline, was being offered for £10.46 via Booking.com, reflecting a 40% increase. Airfares also saw unjustified markups, with a flight listed at £98.53 instead of the airline’s direct price of £84.99. These findings suggest that travelers using OTAs may unknowingly pay significantly more for identical services, reinforcing the importance of verifying costs before completing bookings.

This means a financial strain, especially for people who are cash strapped. The extra cost of basic services like seat selections and baggage fees can add up, so your trips can get out of hand much faster. Instead of benefiting from perceived convenience, many travelers find themselves paying inflated prices for services that could be booked directly at a lower cost. In addition to the non-existent breakdown of prices on OTA websites, this does not help consumers make an informed buying choice.

To avoid unnecessary expenses, travelers are encouraged to cross-check prices between OTAs and airline websites before finalizing purchases. Booking directly with airlines remains the most transparent and cost-effective approach, ensuring access to genuine rates and airline promotions. Additionally, utilizing flight comparison tools that include direct airline pricing can help travelers identify discrepancies. Consumer awareness and careful research remain key to minimizing unexpected charges and optimizing travel budgets.

The increasing proof of over-the-top OTA markups indicates that there should be stricter consumer protections in travel. Pricing transparency is key to avoiding the manipulation that can cause a loss of trust for travelers. Until regulatory changes are made, individuals need to stay on guard for booking flights along associated services. By prioritizing direct purchases and staying informed, travelers can safeguard their budgets and ensure fair pricing in an increasingly complex booking landscape.
