Travelers heading to or through Guildford during the August Bank Holiday weekend should expect disruptions as train services will be suspended from Saturday 23 August to Monday 25 August. The Ascot to Guildford to Alton line and the Surbiton to Effingham Junction route will be closed for essential engineering works. Replacement buses will operate to maintain passenger access but journeys will take longer than usual and direct connections will be limited.

Planned engineering works will focus on two key sections of the South Western Railway network:

Ascot - Guildford - Alton

  • Replacement of the Bentley station footbridge using a crane.
  • Upgrades to the electrical supply in the Ash Vale area.
  • Clearing vegetation and litter between Farnham and Alton.

Surbiton - Effingham Junction

  • Fitting 14 extended-life wheel timbers.
  • Earthwork improvements and tree removal in the Cobham area.
  • Additional maintenance near Effingham Junction, Horsley, London Road (Guildford) and Bookham Tunnel.

The closures will make reaching some local attractions more challenging. Access to Dapdune Wharf on the River Wey, a historic barge yard popular for walking and boat trips, is expected to be more difficult during the closures. Stoke Park in Guildford, known for its gardens, sports facilities, and outdoor spaces, could experience reduced visitor numbers because of the transport changes. St Martha’s Hill, known for panoramic views and ancient earthworks, will also be more difficult to reach via replacement bus services.

Temporary service changes on the Surbiton to Effingham Junction route could affect visits to other sites. Painshill, an 18th century landscaped garden near Cobham, may be less convenient to reach. Cobham Mill, a historic water mill, will require alternative travel arrangements, and St Mary’s Church in Stoke d’Abernon, one of the oldest local churches, may also see fewer visitors. Replacement bus services will operate as follows:

  • On Saturday 23 and Monday 25 August, buses will replace trains between Surbiton and Effingham Junction
  • On Sunday 24 August, buses will operate between Guildford and Surbiton via Effingham and Leatherhead
We are grateful to our passengers for their patience whilst we carry out essential engineering work over the August Bank Holiday weekend. We try to carry out our works during the least disruptive times, and bank holidays are when fewer passengers travel.
Speaking on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, Mark Goodall, Wessex route director

Although these closures may temporarily disrupt travel, the work will bring long term benefits for passengers. The replacement footbridge, enhanced electrical systems, and long-lasting wheel timbers are expected to make services more reliable and lower the need for future repairs. Travelers are advised to check updated timetables and allow extra journey time. Despite the temporary disruption, holidaymakers and local visitors can still enjoy their trips with careful advance planning.
