Flash floods swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area of Grand Canyon National Park on 29 August, killing two people and leaving one person missing. Around 80 people were rescued or evacuated as water damaged trails, bridges and the Transcanyon Waterline. From 31 August, all overnight lodging inside the park was suspended, although the South Rim remains open for day visits.

The flooding hit Bright Angel Creek at about 2.30pm and destroyed nearly all footbridges across the creek. Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the entire North Kaibab Trail are closed until further notice. The Black and Silver bridges across the Colorado River are also closed, while the Bright Angel Trail remains open only as far as River Resthouse. NPS has not announced reopening dates.

The hotel closures are mainly linked to the loss of water supply. Flooding knocked the Transcanyon Waterline out of service, leaving limited reserves on the South Rim. Stage 4 restrictions now allow only dry camping, with most campground spigots switched off and wood or charcoal fires banned. Food outlets and other daytime services remain open, although some may operate reduced hours.

What Visitors Need to Check Now

  • South Rim: Open for day visitors.
  • In-park hotels: El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Yavapai Lodge and other overnight accommodation are closed.
  • Nearby stays: Hotels in Tusayan, just outside the South Entrance, are not affected.
  • Camping: Dry camping only on the South Rim.
  • Hiking: North Kaibab Trail and Phantom Ranch are closed; check the NPS trail-status page before setting out.
  • River trips: The latest NPS flood notice still lists Colorado River traffic as closed until further notice.
Visitors should check current NPS alerts before hiking, as flash floods, falling rocks and debris can quickly change trail conditions. Source: NSP

Anyone with an overnight booking inside the park needs to contact the hotel operator before travelling and arrange accommodation elsewhere. Day trips are still possible, but hikers should not rely on an old route plan because bridge and trail closures now break several usual inner-canyon connections. During monsoon weather, check the NPS alerts immediately before hiking and turn back if thunderstorms or flash-flood warnings develop.
