The Avalon Marshes, located near Glastonbury in Somerset, have become the focus of a major project to restore the region's natural wetlands. These areas, associated with the mythical Isle of Avalon from Arthurian legend, hold significant ecological and historical importance.

Historically, Somerset was covered with extensive wetlands known as the Somerset Levels. Over the centuries, much of this area was drained for agricultural purposes, leading to a loss of biodiversity. The Avalon Marshes restoration project aims to reverse this trend by reintroducing water and restoring the original wetland ecosystems.

The Avalon Marshes are open to visitors, offering opportunity to explore restored natural landscapes. Visitors can walk and cycle along trails, watch birds from specially equipped hides, and learn from informational displays. The Avalon Archaeology Centre offers tours that narrate the region's history through reconstructed historical structures.

In addition to birdwatching, visitors to the Avalon Marshes can explore a variety of nature trails perfect for walking and cycling. These trails meander through the newly restored landscapes, offering stunning views and a serene environment for nature lovers. Specially designed hides allow visitors to observe birds and other wildlife up close without disturbing their natural habitat.

Visitors are encouraged to take full advantage of the guided tours and educational opportunities provided by the Avalon Archaeology Centre, as well as the peaceful walks and wildlife observation points throughout the marshes. This project not only enhances the natural beauty of the region but also supports sustainable tourism and conservation efforts.
