Finnair Reminds Passengers of Carry On Rules Ahead of New EU Liquid Restrictions

Finnair has clarified its cabin baggage policy across fare types in response to common traveller questions. Light, Classic, and Flex ticket holders are entitled to bring one small item and one standard carry-on. Superlight fare passengers, however, may only take a small item that fits under the seat, unless they purchase an additional bag or qualify for a tier benefit through the airline’s loyalty programme.

To help travellers pack properly, Finnair specifies exact limits on baggage size and weight. These rules are important to keep boarding smooth and cabin storage efficient: Size limits:

  • Small personal item: maximum 40 by 30 by 15 centimetres
  • Standard carry-on bag: maximum 55 by 40 by 23 centimetres

Weight limits:

  • Business Class passengers may bring carry-on bags weighing up to 12 kilograms in total
  • Economy and Premium Economy passengers have an 8-kilogram limit combined

Additional information:

  • Bags that are too large or too heavy must be placed in the aircraft hold, which may incur extra fees
  • Any goods purchased at the airport need to fit within the passenger’s permitted baggage allowance

Alongside these internal updates, passengers should prepare for new EU-wide liquid restrictions. Starting 1 September 2024, all liquids in hand luggage must be in containers no larger than 100 ml, applying to all European airports, including Helsinki. Essential travel-related medical items and baby food are exceptions, but must still follow airport security procedures.

These changes are likely to affect passenger routines at the airport. Travellers will need to carefully review baggage entitlements tied to their fare and ensure compliance with liquid rules to avoid delays. By separating medical devices and mobility aids from standard baggage limits, the airline ensures accessibility without compromising space limitations for other international passengers.

For those planning upcoming trips, the updated policy offers clearer expectations and reduces the risk of unforeseen charges. Checking baggage details before departure, especially for connecting flights, will be vital. With upcoming EU regulations, travellers should start preparing now and pack thoughtfully to help ensure a smoother experience at the airport and steer clear of any unnecessary problems.
