With Milan tightening its late-night dining rules, discover European cities where you can still enjoy pizza and a beer after midnight.

Nights out that turn into early morning adventures are becoming rare in London. The city has lost over 1,000 venues due to rising costs and limited late licenses, particularly affecting Soho. This has left central London with few post-midnight activities.

Milan, known for its vibrant late-night dining, faces similar challenges. In Porta Venezia, a temporary weekend ban on takeaway food sales after midnight was enacted due to resident complaints about noisy tourists. Milan's Mayor Giuseppe Sala emphasized the need for cities to rest, recommending an aperitivo at Lacerba for early-night dining.

Fortunately, other European cities maintain their late-night charm. With favorable weather and cultural habits like siestas, these cities offer lively late-night scenes.

Athens

Athens, once a mere stopover, is now a bustling destination. The city comes alive at night, with warm evenings perfect for terrace dining and mezze feasts. Kypseli is particularly lively, with patrons spilling onto the pavements. Au Revoir, Athens' oldest bar, is a must-visit. Metro and tram services run until 2am on weekends, with taxis readily available.

Berlin

Berlin remains a nightlife hub, highlighted by the iconic Berghain. Known for its long queues and strict entry, Berghain offers dynamic DJ sets and bustling dance floors. Alternatives include Bei Schlawinchen, a 24-hour bar, and Melek Pastanesi for late-night baklava. The U-Bahn runs from 4am to 1am on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.

Madrid

Madrid's late-night culture is a national identity. The city comes alive around 9:20pm, with dinner and nightlife thriving. Toni2, a piano bar, entertains until 6am, and San Ginés, a 24-hour chocolatier, offers late-night treats. Madrid’s Metro operates from 6am to 1:30am, ensuring easy night transport.

Amsterdam

Despite efforts to deter stag parties, Amsterdam’s nightlife is vibrant. Restaurants like BAK and Daalder offer late-night dining, while clubs such as De Melkweg host lively parties. For a quieter night, De Japanner serves dishes into the early hours. Amsterdam’s last tram leaves Central Station at 12:15am, with night buses taking over.
