European ‘City’ Airports That Are Nowhere Near the City

Many travellers have found themselves landing at an airport named after a major European city, only to discover the actual city is far away. Airport transfer specialists SCS Chauffeurs highlighted several such cases, noting that distance can surprise first-time visitors. The issue is not new, but ongoing demand for low-cost flights has brought renewed attention to airports marketed under familiar city names despite being located many miles from the centre.

Topping the list is Frankfurt-Hahn, situated around 78 miles from Frankfurt and notably closer to Luxembourg. Reaching Frankfurt can take an hour and a half by car. Similar confusion arises in Scandinavia, where Oslo-Torp lies 68 miles southwest of the Norwegian capital. Stockholm Skavsta, around 62 miles south of Stockholm, and Barcelona-Reus, also roughly 62 miles from Barcelona, fall into the same category.

The pattern continues in Germany and France. Memmingen Airport, sometimes branded as "Munich West," is around 72 miles from Munich’s central districts, while Düsseldorf-Weeze sits about 50 miles from Düsseldorf, close to the Dutch border. Paris Beauvais, 53 miles from the French capital, is another commonly used low-cost hub. Transfers by bus or rail are available, but the extra travel time can eat into tight itineraries, particularly for two-day city breaks

Despite the distances, these airports can still serve as useful gateways. Frankfurt-Hahn offers onward links not only to Frankfurt but to Luxembourg, vineyards along the Moselle and smaller Rhineland towns. Oslo-Torp has bus links to coastal Sandefjord and the Oslofjord region. Memmingen opens access to Bavaria’s alpine towns, while Barcelona-Reus sits within reach of Tarragona and the Costa Dorada. For travellers mixing city breaks with regional exploration, these locations need not be a drawback.

The continued use of city branding reflects recognition on airline booking sites and the price gap between main and secondary airports. A January fare to Frankfurt-Hahn from London Stansted can cost around £15 with Ryanair, versus about £70 to central Frankfurt with British Airways. Similar spreads appear for Munich and Oslo. The trend shows how low-cost carriers have reshaped airport geography in Europe, rewarding those who check distances before clicking "book".
