American Airlines will extend its daily Edinburgh–Philadelphia service into the winter season, operating from 29 March until early January. The route, which returned last summer, has performed strongly, prompting the airline to keep it running well beyond the traditional summer schedule. Edinburgh Airport notes that Philadelphia remains Scotland’s only direct link to the city, giving travellers access to a major US metropolitan area and its connecting network.

Alongside this development, American Airlines will resume a daily Edinburgh–New York JFK service for the full summer season in 2026. This flight will operate between 8 March and 24 October and will use an A321XLR aircraft with 155 seats, one of the newer planes in the airline’s fleet. The move strengthens American Airlines’ presence at Edinburgh Airport, adding another layer to the airport’s transatlantic offering during busy travel months.

Airport officials highlight that transatlantic demand remains strong in both directions. The Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport described the extension as a positive start to the year and noted that interest in US links has risen ahead of major sporting events, including the 2026 World Cup, where Scottish supporters may choose to travel. The airport adds that having direct US links benefits both business travel and leisure markets during periods of higher seasonal demand.

The two direct routes increase access to a wide range of destinations. Philadelphia offers historic neighbourhoods, museums and food markets, as well as convenient onward flights within the United States. New York JFK opens one of the busiest global gateways, making trips to Manhattan, Long Island, New England and neighbouring cities like Boston or Washington D.C. more straightforward. With both flights running daily, short breaks and longer itineraries become easier to plan during summer and early autumn.

Airlines often change their long-haul schedules when demand stays high outside the summer holiday period. Keeping the Philadelphia link running for most of the year gives Edinburgh an unusually long season of direct US flights, and bringing back the JFK service adds another key US gateway for 2026. The result is more direct links to the United States without relying on Heathrow, and a stronger position for Edinburgh Airport in both tourism and business travel.
