Air New Zealand will open bookings for its Economy Skynest™ from 18 May 2026, introducing lie-flat sleeping pods for Economy and Premium Economy passengers. The concept will be available on the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 aircraft entering service from November 2026. Designed for ultra long-haul journeys, the new option allows passengers to book a dedicated space to rest during flights to and from New Zealand.

The aircraft will include six lie-flat sleeping pods set in a bunk-style arrangement between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Each pod offers a full-length mattress, bedding, lighting designed for rest, ventilation and charging points. The airline states the design has been tested with more than 200 participants to refine comfort and usability during extended travel periods across intercontinental routes.

Key Features of Economy Skynest

  • Six lie-flat sleep pods in bunk-style layout
  • Four-hour rest sessions available to book
  • Two sessions planned per flight initially
  • Bedding, lighting, ventilation and charging included
  • Available on Boeing 787-9 aircraft from November 2026

Passengers booking Economy or Premium Economy seats may add a four-hour session, priced from approximately 495 NZD. Sessions are structured to allow time to settle, sleep and wake gradually. The airline positions the concept as part of ongoing efforts to adjust cabin design for longer flight durations, especially on routes connecting New Zealand with distant global destinations.

Getting proper rest on very long flights can make faraway destinations feel easier to consider, especially when the journey takes many hours. Arriving more rested may help people start exploring sooner, whether visiting cities such as Auckland or travelling further to places like Queenstown or Wellington. The option to lie flat for several hours may also make longer itineraries feel less tiring when planning trips across the Pacific region.

"Skynest is designed to help make that easier. It reflects the practical innovation New Zealand is known for, and shows how thoughtful design can improve the travel experience. By giving more people the chance to properly rest on ultra long-haul flights, it helps make travel to and from New Zealand more manageable."
Nikhil Ravishankar, Air New Zealand Chief Executive

Sleep pods in Economy show that airlines are paying more attention to comfort on very long flights, not only in premium cabins. Giving more passengers access to a place to lie flat may change expectations for long-distance flying. Developments like this suggest that rest quality is becoming part of the travel decision, especially where flight duration can influence destination choice.
