Wizz Air has announced it will begin operating direct flights from Maastricht Aachen Airport to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, starting 31 March 2026. The service will operate three times per week, bringing the total number of destinations from Maastricht to six for the summer season. The move comes after earlier updates to the winter and summer schedules, which include twice-weekly flights to Tuzla starting December 2025. The new route allows travelers to reach Montenegro directly, improving convenience for leisure trips, family visits, and general travel planning across Southeast Europe.

Wizz Air is extending its Maastricht network to allow passengers more direct links to central and southeastern European cities. As part of the summer 2026 schedule, Maastricht will be connected to multiple destinations:

  • Three weekly flights to Chișinău (Moldova)
  • Two to Bucharest (Romania)
  • Four to Katowice (Poland)
  • Two to Lublin (Poland)
  • Three weekly flights to Podgorica (Montenegro)

In total, the airline will operate sixteen weekly departures. Airport management stated that adding Podgorica responds to increasing passenger demand and highlights Wizz Air’s confidence in Maastricht Aachen Airport as a regional hub. The route strengthens accessibility to Southeast Europe and offers travelers new options for direct international connections.

“In addition to the capitals Bucharest and Chișinău, the Montenegrin capital Podgorica has now also been added to our route network. This new route strengthens our connections to Southeast Europe and offers both tourists and passengers visiting family and friends a direct and convenient link."
Dean Boljuncic, Head of Commercial Development at Maastricht Aachen Airport

Podgorica itself provides several accessible landmarks and outdoor spaces for visitors. Visitors can see the Clock Tower of Stara Varoš, an Ottoman-era landmark located in the city center. They can walk across the Millennium Bridge for views of the Morača River or visit Ribnica River Park, a riverside area suitable for walking, spending time outdoors, and observing the surroundings. These sites offer both cultural context and leisure opportunities, making the city center suitable for short visits or day trips without the need for extensive travel.

A short drive from Podgorica leads to multiple natural and recreational destinations. Skadar Lake National Park, located roughly an hour from Podgorica, offers opportunities for birdwatching and walking along the lakeshore. The Morača Canyon provides hiking paths and scenic viewpoints along the river. Golubovci Fields, a rural area near the city, allows for cycling and countryside exploration. Together, these locations combine city sightseeing with outdoor activities, offering a balanced travel experience that is accessible from Podgorica in a single day.

The introduction of the Maastricht to Podgorica route improves connectivity between the Limburg region and Southeast Europe, providing travelers with direct options for leisure, family visits, and short trips. The route reinforces Maastricht Aachen Airport’s position as a regional hub while improving access to Podgorica and nearby areas. Scheduled weekly flights offer travelers the chance to balance city exploration with nearby nature and outdoor activities, suitable for short or longer visits.
