Christchurch Gets Three New Long-Haul Routes

Air New Zealand will launch three new non-stop services from Christchurch, adding flights to Singapore, Tokyo Narita and Perth. The move is part of a new agreement with Christchurch Airport to improve access to New Zealand’s South Island. Flights are on sale now, with services due to begin from late October, subject to regulatory approval.

The expansion has been made possible by Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787 aircraft returning to service after global engine maintenance issues, alongside new 787s entering the fleet. The airline says the added flying is intended to reconnect Christchurch with major Asian hubs, strengthen Australian links and change how visitors reach the region, with more long-haul traffic arriving directly into the city.

Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport have signed a memorandum of understanding to support long-term network planning, customer experience and future route development. The agreement is aimed at building the city’s role as a stronger gateway for overseas visitors.

• Christchurch-Singapore: starts 28 October
• Christchurch-Tokyo Narita: starts 28 November
• Christchurch-Perth: starts 30 November

The routes open useful options for visitors who want to start a New Zealand trip in the south rather than flying first into Auckland. Singapore and Tokyo bring stronger Asian access, while Perth adds another direct Australian connection. Christchurch also puts visitors closer to Canterbury, the Southern Alps, Akaroa, Kaikōura and road trips towards Queenstown or the West Coast.
