Chengdu, the administrative center of Sichuan Province in China, celebrated for its relaxed lifestyle and flavorful food, is experiencing a rise in the number of international visitors. This city, well-known for its giant pandas and cultural landmarks, has gained even more attention following the recent introduction of a 144-hour visa-free transit policy.

Since this new entry policy was put into place, Chengdu has become significantly more appealing to overseas tourists, as evidenced by statistics from the Sichuan Border Inspection Authority. From January to August 2024, around 286,000 foreign nationals arrived in Chengdu, with almost 50% utilizing the visa-free option.

Advantages of Visa-Free Travel

The updated visa regulation was launched to enhance tourism and benefit the local economy. With this policy, international tourists can stay up to six days in Chengdu without needing to secure a visa, making the city a favorable stop for those passing through. Officials have set up specific zones and deployed staff members to facilitate the process of acquiring entry and departure permits, making visits more convenient.

Cultural Appeal and Visitor Interests

Chengdu attracts not only wildlife enthusiasts but also those keen on exploring China’s rich cultural traditions. The city’s residents are known for their easygoing nature, creating a welcoming environment that appeals to visitors. The city's cuisine, renowned for its spiciness and depth of flavor, further boosts its attractiveness to tourists.

The rise in international travelers has a positive effect on the local economy, generating income for accommodations, dining establishments, and travel services. Implementing the visa-free policy has been a vital move toward expanding the tourism sector in the region and building stronger global connections.
