Two key airports on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast—Burgas and Varna—will undergo a large-scale redevelopment of their landside commercial zones. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management has signed new seven-year concession contracts for retail and dining services after a competitive tender process. These changes mark a major shift in how both airports aim to serve growing passenger volumes while modernizing spaces outside of the secured departure areas.

Lagardere Travel Retail has been granted full control of all landside retail operations, while food and beverage concessions will be managed jointly by Gingers and Lagardere. Renovation works are expected to begin shortly, with new outlets scheduled to open before the summer travel peak. This initiative aims to revamp the pre-security experience, offering greater variety and improved aesthetics for travelers and visitors alike.

The upgrades promise greater convenience before check-in and boarding. Travelers often spend considerable time in landslide zones—especially during peak seasons—and the availability of new services can reduce stress and improve comfort. A broader mix of international chains and local brands will offer more dining and shopping options, contributing to a more dynamic and enjoyable pre-flight environment. The new layout is also expected to improve flow and reduce congestion in the terminal's public spaces.

Beyond the needs of departing passengers, these developments also benefit those meeting arrivals or seeing off friends and family. The reimagined public zones will offer better waiting areas, enhanced amenities, and new opportunities for social interaction or relaxation. That reflects increasing attention from around the world to land airports as multifunctional spaces serving travelers and locals. Additionally, it encourages non-travelers to engage more with airport spaces, making them attractive beyond traditional use.

This is good news for travelers using both Burgas and Varna airports during their travels. By investing in landside upgrades, Fraport is addressing a common pain point in air travel: the experience before security. The changes are intended to make for more enjoyable and less painful airport experiences in line with current international airport visitor standards for Bulgaria.
