Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube, is renowned for its thermal baths and majestic architecture, but its rich and delicious cuisine is equally noteworthy. Here are five sweet and savory specialties you need to try during your stay in Hungary.

The signature dish of Hungary, goulash is a delightful blend of stew and soup made with slowly simmered beef and vegetables. The key ingredient is paprika, which imparts a reddish color and slightly smoky flavor. Each restaurant in Budapest offers its own unique take on goulash, particularly in the lively Erzsébetváros district, where the Gozsdu passageway is lined with restaurants serving this hearty dish.

Often referred to as the seafood version of goulash, halászlé is a spicy soup made with freshwater fish like carp or pike, combined with paprika and tomatoes. Originally from southern Hungary, this dish is often garnished with spicy peppers. In summer, some Budapest restaurants prepare halászlé outdoors in large cauldrons, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A visit to Budapest's markets is incomplete without trying lángos. This fried dough, crispy on the outside and chewy inside, is traditionally topped with sour cream and grated cheese. Modern variations include toppings such as garlic, ham, and even sweet options. At Budapest’s central market, Vásárcsarnok, you can enjoy lángos amidst the historic market halls.

For those with a sweet tooth, kürtőskalács, or chimney cake, is a must-try. This sweet pastry is wrapped around a wooden cylinder, baked on a spit, and caramelized to perfection. It can be enjoyed plain or with toppings like nuts or chocolate. Street stalls across Budapest sell this delicious treat.

Krémes, similar to a custard slice, features thick vanilla cream sandwiched between layers of puff pastry. Enjoy this sweet delicacy in one of Budapest's traditional cafés, such as Ruszwurm Cukrászda, which has been serving pastries since 1827.

These culinary delights offer a taste of Budapest’s rich gastronomic heritage, making your visit to the Hungarian capital even more memorable.
