Travellers planning trips through north Cambridgeshire and Norfolk this autumn should be aware of weekend rail disruptions in the Ely area. Major engineering works will take place on 4-5 October, 11-12 October, 18-19 October, 25-26 October, 1-2 November, and 16 November. Travellers planning to visit scenic areas, nature reserves, or riverside trails may need to adjust their itineraries, as train services will change and replacement transport will operate on affected weekends.

Travellers should be aware that the works go beyond routine maintenance and include major upgrades along the route. The engineering programme includes several key upgrades to the railway infrastructure:

  • Renewal of over 1,500 metres of track, ballast, and sleepers between Ely North junction and Chettisham
  • Replacement of three sets of points to allow trains to switch lines safely
  • Installation of new rail near Waterbeach
  • Track tamping at Ely station to improve ride quality
  • Upgraded signalling equipment to support safe operations

These upgrades aim to support secure and consistent travel for everyday passengers as well as those visiting local attractions.

"Busy areas of the network can see more wear of the rails through extensive use by passenger and freight services. The track between Ely North junction and Manae experiences a lot of use and this autumn we’re planning to renew over 1500 metres of track to keep services moving safety."
Katie Frost, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia

Weekend service changes will make access to popular local destinations more challenging. Visitors planning trips to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve may experience longer travel times due to rail replacement services. Access to the Ouse Washes, an important habitat for migratory birds, could be disrupted, particularly for weekend travellers. Similarly, the RSPB Nene Washes reserve may be harder to reach, as alternative transport arrangements could extend journey durations.

Other attractions likely to be affected include Flag Fen Archaeology Park, with its Bronze Age remains, Littleport Riverside Walks along the River Great Ouse, and Anglesey Abbey gardens, a large outdoor heritage site. During the engineering works, travellers to these attractions should prepare for possible delays and plan different routes where available, particularly on affected weekends.

While the temporary disruptions may be inconvenient, the upgrades are crucial for improving long-term rail reliability and safety. When finished, the upgrades are expected to cut delays and provide more reliable travel along busy rail routes. Travellers passing through Ely this autumn should plan for extra journey time and stay updated with train operators to maintain safe and smooth access to local natural and historical sites during the weekend service disruptions.
