American Airlines has confirmed that free high-speed Wi-Fi will be introduced for members of its AAdvantage loyalty programme, with a phased rollout beginning in January 2026. The service, sponsored by AT&T, is expected to cover more than two million flights annually. Connectivity will be delivered via satellite systems operated by Viasat and Intelsat, targeting consistency across the airline’s core domestic and international short- and medium-haul network.

The rollout will begin with American’s entire narrowbody fleet and dual-class regional aircraft, which account for a large share of its day-to-day operations. By early spring, coverage is expected to extend to almost all scheduled services, including long-haul flights operated by newly delivered Boeing 787 aircraft. Once fully implemented, American will offer complimentary onboard internet across a larger share of its fleet than any other airline.

What the Wi-Fi rollout includes

  • Free high-speed internet for AAdvantage members
  • Coverage across all narrowbody and dual-class regional aircraft
  • Availability on new Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 long-haul aircraft
  • Satellite connectivity powered by Viasat and Intelsat
  • Access via the aainflight onboard portal

Passengers will connect by logging into their AAdvantage account during the flight, with no payment or vouchers required. Loyalty programme membership remains free and can be activated before departure or while onboard.

Wider onboard connectivity changes how time in the air can be used, particularly on longer domestic routes, transcontinental services and overnight flights. Journeys between major U.S. cities, international gateways and business centres become more practical for working, planning or staying in touch. On leisure trips, reliable internet supports last-minute bookings, itinerary updates and coordination upon arrival without waiting to land.

Free high-speed Wi-Fi isn’t just a perk - it’s essential for today’s travelers. That’s why we’re proud to begin rolling out this new offering, sponsored by AT&T, across the majority of our fleet. Once roll out is completed, every AAdvantage® member can stay connected, stream and share almost anywhere their journey takes them for free.
Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer

The decision reflects shifting expectations around onboard services, where connectivity is increasingly treated as standard rather than optional. As airlines compete on experience as well as network reach, free Wi-Fi is becoming a subtle but meaningful factor in flight choice. For those flying American in 2026, the rollout points to a more connected journey without added cost, especially on routes where time spent in the air matters.
