American Airlines has unveiled three new perks for its frequent flyers, enhancing its AAdvantage loyalty program. These benefits will be available later this year and offer members more ways to earn and redeem miles, contributing to an extensive program overhaul.

Frequent flyers can now earn miles when paying cash to upgrade their seats, a popular choice among American Airlines customers. This new perk will be available starting later this year. Currently, members can redeem miles for upgrades, with prices beginning at 5,000 miles for domestic flights.

Additionally, AAdvantage members will be able to redeem miles for AAdvantage Events experiences. Members already earn miles and loyalty points for booking events through Ticketmaster, earning 1 AAdvantage mile and 1 Loyalty Point for every dollar spent on standard and resale tickets (excluding taxes and fees).

The airline's most loyal frequent flyers, those with AAdvantage Platinum Pro status, will soon have the option to redeem miles for access to American's Flagship First Dining lounges. These lounges, available at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), offer first-class dining experiences with menus crafted by local chefs.

American Airlines is also expanding its network of Flagship Lounges. A new lounge is set to open at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in 2025, as part of the airline's second transatlantic hub expansion. This new space will include both a Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club.

Recent Enhancements

In the first half of the year, American Airlines has made several improvements to its frequent flyer program. The airline has rolled out WiFi on all its Viasat-equipped narrowbody aircraft and plans to extend this to widebody aircraft by fall. While the WiFi is ad-supported, AAdvantage members can now use miles for inflight WiFi sessions.

To attract infrequent flyers, the airline has introduced free standby for earlier flights, a feature accessible through the mobile app or website. Additionally, AAdvantage members can cancel non-refundable Basic Economy tickets for a partial trip credit and enjoy an extended period to use their Trip Credit.

Previously announced changes, including new redemption opportunities for upgrades on additional airlines and the ability to request systemwide upgrades online, are still forthcoming.
