A high-speed rail link between Africa and Europe, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, is gaining momentum and could be realized by 2030. This ambitious project aims to connect Spain's high-speed rail network with Morocco's Al Boraq rail line, offering a new land route for tourists and businesses.

The concept of a rail connection between Africa and Europe has been around since the 1970s. Renewed interest emerged with a $2.5 million feasibility study funded by the Spanish government in 2023. This study was part of the European Union's economic recovery efforts post-pandemic.

The proposed route would start in Madrid, travel south to Algeciras, cross the 17-mile Strait of Gibraltar, and continue through Tangier, Rabat, and Casablanca. This new connection could significantly boost tourism and commerce between the two continents.

Initial estimates suggest the project could cost around $6.5 billion. However, the engineering challenges are considerable. The Strait of Gibraltar's deepest point reaches 2,950 feet, and the region is known for seismic activity due to the Azores–Gibraltar fault line.

Despite these challenges, the project holds significant promise for tourism. Morocco is a popular destination for European travelers due to its proximity. Tourism is a vital part of Morocco's economy, contributing 9% of its GDP. In 2022, Morocco was the second most visited African country, attracting 10.9 million international arrivals, according to Statista.

If successful, this rail link could revolutionize travel and trade between Africa and Europe, making it easier for tourists and businesses to move between the continents. The potential economic and cultural benefits make this an exciting prospect for both regions.
