Airline Bag Fees Rise as American Updates Basic Economy Rules
American Airlines has updated checked baggage fees and changed conditions for Basic Economy tickets for bookings made from 9 April 2026. The new prices apply to domestic flights within the United States and to short-haul international routes to Canada, the Caribbean and parts of Central America. According to the airline, the changes are part of a regular review of ticket pricing in response to current operating costs.
From 18 May 2026, Basic Economy fares will include higher charges for the first and second checked bags. These tickets continue to include one personal item and one carry-on bag, along with snacks and onboard entertainment. However, seat selection will require payment, and complimentary upgrades will not be available. Free checked baggage remains available for AAdvantage status members, premium cabin travellers and active-duty U.S. military personnel.
Updated baggage fees from April 2026
- First checked bag: $45 online / $50 at the airport
- Second checked bag: $55 online / $60 at the airport
- Third checked bag: $200
- Basic Economy first bag (from 18 May): $50 online / $55 airport
- Basic Economy second bag (from 18 May): $60 online / $65 airport
The revised fees apply to domestic flights including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as selected nearby international routes.
Although baggage fee changes do not directly influence route networks, ticket pricing can affect how travellers plan trips between cities served by American Airlines’ extensive network. Destinations across North America, the Caribbean and Central America remain widely accessible, including popular city breaks, coastal holidays and multi-stop journeys where travellers compare ticket types to manage overall travel costs.
The changes show a clearer difference between the lowest fares and tickets that include more flexibility. Travellers choosing Basic Economy may need to check the full price carefully, especially if they plan to check baggage or select a seat in advance.
