Greater Anglia has announced additional train services for passengers attending Newmarket Nights on Friday 31 July and Friday 7 August. The extra trains will operate after the regular timetable, providing more travel options once the evening events have finished. The rail operator is adding the services as part of its preparations for increased passenger numbers expected around Newmarket Racecourse, one of the region’s busiest summer event venues.

Two late-night departures will run in addition to scheduled services. A train will leave Newmarket for Cambridge at 23:29, operating directly to Cambridge, while another service will depart for Ipswich at 00:26. The Ipswich-bound train will call at Kennett, Bury St Edmunds, Thurston, Elmswell, Stowmarket and Needham Market before reaching its final destination, giving passengers several options for returning home after the event.

“Services are expected to be busy, so passengers should plan ahead, allow plenty of time and buy their tickets before they travel."
Connor Lake, Special Events Delivery Manager, Greater Anglia

Increased Demand After Evening Events

Newmarket Nights is one of the racecourse's best-known summer attractions, drawing visitors to Newmarket for an evening of racing and entertainment. The events bring significant numbers of spectators to the town, particularly on busy summer dates. With many people travelling back to Cambridge, Ipswich and other destinations after the programme finishes, the railway operator has arranged additional late-night services to support demand.

Visitors arriving by train can use a complimentary shuttle bus operating between Newmarket railway station and Newmarket Racecourse. This connection allows passengers to complete the final part of their journey without needing additional transport arrangements. Those planning to travel are advised to allow extra time, purchase tickets before departure where possible and expect busier conditions than usual when leaving the venue after the event concludes.

The additional trains show how rail operators are adapting services to match demand created by large events across the region. Together with the shuttle connection, the extra trains create a more coordinated travel option for those attending Newmarket Nights. With thousands of people expected to leave the venue after the programme ends, the extra capacity is intended to make late-evening journeys easier on the busiest dates.
