Aalborg Airport has marked the launch of its first direct charter flight to Cape Verde, operated in cooperation with tour operator Spies. The inaugural departure travelled to the island of Sal, a destination known for warm weather and coastal landscapes. The opening was celebrated at the gate with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments for passengers and a traditional water salute as the aircraft departed.

The flight was operated by SunClass Airlines using an Airbus A330-900neo, one of the largest aircraft types seen at Aalborg Airport. The plane departed fully booked, reflecting strong interest in the new long-haul charter option. According to the airport’s management, the route responds to growing demand for direct holiday travel to destinations with stable weather conditions, particularly during periods when travellers look for reliable sunshine.

The charter route was introduced as part of Spies’ anniversary programme and marks the first direct flight between Aalborg and Cape Verde. Interest in the destination has been strong, including among travellers looking beyond common European holiday options. The flight adds Cape Verde as a direct destination available from Aalborg.

What Makes Sal a Popular Destination

  • Long sandy beaches
  • Warm climate throughout the year
  • Atlantic coastal landscapes
  • Relaxed pace of travel
  • Stable temperatures around 26°C in April

Cape Verde lies off the west coast of Africa and has a consistently warm climate with coastal resort areas. The direct flight removes the transfer previously required on this route and shortens the journey. Sal is among the most visited islands of the archipelago and is mainly associated with beach-focused holidays and a quieter atmosphere.

The first direct long-haul charter flight shows that regional airports are expanding their range of destinations beyond Europe. The possibility to fly to Cape Verde without a transfer may affect how some people plan winter or spring holidays. The new route demonstrates clear demand for direct long-distance charter flights departing from Aalborg.
