The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, offers a rich and varied experience that’s hard to fully appreciate in just one day. However, this action-packed itinerary provides a fantastic introduction to the city’s cultural, historical, and culinary delights.

8am: Morning Hike Up Mount Tibidabo

Start your day with an invigorating hike up Mount Tibidabo, which overlooks the city. The hour-long hike along the trails to the summit church, set amid a retro funfair, offers spectacular views. Begin at the Tibidabo Funicular base station and enjoy the scenic ride back down after your hike.

10am: Visit to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

Head to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, perched on Montjuïc hill. This grand museum, inspired by St Peter’s in the Vatican and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, houses a dazzling collection of Catalan art. Enjoy a tallat (espresso with steamed milk) in the café within the museum's vast Sala Oval.

12.30pm: Drinks and a Bite by the Pool

Visit the site of the 1992 Olympics on Montjuïc, which has transformed into an open-air bar with a loyal local following. Relax with a sangria or Aperol spritz and a light meal, such as a walnut and goat’s cheese salad or a jamón ibérico sandwich, while enjoying views of the city.

3pm: Explore the Gothic Quarter

Dive into the Gothic Quarter, a maze of narrow lanes filled with artisan shops, craft boutiques, and indie clothing stores. Visit the century-old Sombrerería Obach hat shop and the Granja Dulcinea chocolate shop, both offering unique, locally crafted goods.

4pm: Coffee in Plaça Neri

If you need a break, retreat to the tranquil Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. This atmospheric square features a central fountain and a church scarred by historical bomb damage. Enjoy a coffee at the Hotel Neri’s compact roof terrace, surrounded by terracotta pots and banana plants.

5pm: Hit the Beach

A visit to Barcelona isn’t complete without spending time at its urban seafront. Stroll along the expansive promenade of Playa de la Barceloneta, starting from the sail-shaped W Hotel to Frank Gehry’s iridescent Peix sculpture. Enjoy the beach as the sun sets behind Montjuïc.

7pm: Tapas at Quimet & Quimet

End your day with tapas at Quimet & Quimet, one of Barcelona’s most sought-after tapas bars. Located in Poble-sec, this standing-room-only spot offers a delightful experience with heaped montaditos (open sandwiches) and a lively atmosphere.

9.30pm: Cocktails at the Nobu

For a stylish finish, head to the Rooftop bar on the 24th floor of the Nobu Hotel in western Eixample. Enjoy a signature jalapeño and ginger martini while taking in panoramic views of the city. If you’re staying at the Nobu Hotel, you can relax in one of its elegant rooms and enjoy the pool the next morning.

This itinerary provides a glimpse of Barcelona’s diverse offerings, from its historical landmarks and cultural treasures to its vibrant culinary scene and beautiful beachfront.
