Situated just east of Dusseldorf, Wuppertal is not a widely known tourist destination. However, the Schwebebahn, a 13-kilometer-long hanging train system that floats 12 meters above the ground, is putting the city on the map. The train ride, which offers panoramic views of the city and the river below, takes about 30 minutes from end to end.

The Schwebebahn has a rich history dating back to 1824 when it was initially designed by English engineer Henry Robinson Palmer. Initially intended as a horse-drawn transport system, it evolved over 80 years into the electric railway that visitors see today. Despite offers to larger cities, the Schwebebahn was installed in Wuppertal due to the city's unique geographical challenges and layout.

For travelers, Wuppertal is easily accessible, with trains from Dusseldorf taking about 20 minutes and from Cologne between 30 to 45 minutes. Although Interrail passes do not cover the Schwebebahn, affordable tickets are available, including a €20 day pass for up to four people, making it an attractive option for tourists.

In addition to the Schwebebahn, Wuppertal offers a variety of attractions. Known as Germany's greenest city, visitors are never far from parks and green spaces. The city features botanical gardens, the Grüne Zoo, and the Waldfrieden sculpture park. Art lovers can visit the Von der Heydt Museum, which houses works by Cezanne and Monet. Transport enthusiasts can enjoy the Bergische Museumsbahn and the Schwebodrom, a museum dedicated to the Schwebebahn's history.

One of the most notable stories in the Schwebebahn's history is the 1950 incident involving Tuffi the elephant, who fell from the train into the river below. This event is part of the colorful lore that makes the Schwebebahn a fascinating subject for visitors.

This development is significant for travelers seeking unique and historical experiences. The Schwebebahn is not just a ride but a journey through engineering marvels and the picturesque cityscape of Wuppertal. Recognized as one of Europe's hidden gems, Wuppertal offers an enticing blend of adventure and culture, making it a must-visit destination.
