Wizz Air faces significant disruptions this week following the unexpected closure of Debrecen International Airport (DEB) in Hungary due to urgent runway repairs. The airport, which serves as a base for Wizz Air, discovered damage to its single runway on July 10, 2024, necessitating a temporary shutdown for at least a week.

On July 11, Debrecen International Airport issued a statement explaining that persistent high temperatures had caused the defect, making the runway unsafe. The airport emphasized that the closure aligns with the highest aviation safety standards and that repairs are underway.

Passengers with flights scheduled from DEB have been advised to contact their airlines or travel agents for updates and alternative arrangements. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) has stepped in to handle some of the affected flights, anticipating an additional 3-4 flights daily and potentially surpassing 55,000 passengers per day.

Budapest Airport is taking measures to accommodate the influx of passengers, including providing free bottled water, access to 13 drinking fountains, and setting up designated waiting areas in Terminals 2A and 2B. These areas offer food, drinks, and essentials for travelers with young children, ensuring comfort during the heatwave.

The CEO of Budapest Airport, Francois Berisot, highlighted the challenges posed by the extreme heat and increased passenger volume, stating that the airport is committed to maintaining smooth operations and supporting both passengers and employees. Special facilities have been arranged to ensure the well-being of everyone during this period.

Debrecen International Airport was scheduled to handle 35 flights today, primarily operated by Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Smartwings, BulgariaAir, and Freebird. While some flights have been diverted, others remain listed as expected, reflecting the ongoing adjustments by the airlines.

As Wizz Air and Budapest Airport manage this challenging situation, passengers are encouraged to stay informed and flexible. The timely resolution of the runway issue at DEB is crucial to restoring normal operations and minimizing further disruptions.
