An unusual museum is gaining popularity in the Caribbean - the world's first underwater sculpture park. It has recently expanded significantly with the addition of new sculptural objects.

The theme park was created by British sculptor and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor in 2006. It is located in Molineux Bay in Grenada and is now one of the most popular underwater attractions in this Caribbean country, as reported by WHDH.

Recently, the installation has been significantly expanded with the addition of 31 new sculptures. Among the new sculptures is the "Coral Carnival," a series of sculptures based on Spicemas, Grenada's hugely popular carnival that showcases iconic masqueraders such as "Jab Jab," a character with chains that is a symbol of freedom for Grenadians.

According to local authorities, the project aims to showcase the culture and history of Grenada. It is emphasized that each of the sculptures, partially created in the UK, is based on images of real people who posed as models for the artists.

It is specified that Taylor worked in collaboration with various local artists, but there are also works by local masters. Grenadian artist Troy Lewis has created four new sculptures, including Christ of the Abyss, a copy of the statue presented to the Grenadian people in recognition of the assistance provided to the crew and passengers of the Bianca C, which sank on the island in 1961.

As conceived by the authors of the exhibition, all the figures are made of high-quality stainless steel and sea cement. Moreover, the sculptures are designed as artificial coral reefs with holes and shelters to attract marine life, such as octopuses and lobsters.

In addition, the sculptor also added color to his underwater sculptures. "This time we used natural pigments to actually paint the sculptures. So I am very interested to see how they will change and whether they will be colonized in a different way. Color has a big impact on marine life," says Taylor.

It should be noted that before being installed underwater, the exhibition was first shown on land at the Prickly Bay Marina in Grenada for four weeks. Finally, the sculptures were carefully installed underwater at the end of October with the help of a crane and several divers.

The coral carnival, which can be reached by boat, has been open to the public since the end of October. The new sculptures are installed at a depth of three to seven meters and can be viewed by divers, snorkelers, and those on glass-bottomed boats, provided there is good visibility.

Taylor's projects mostly focus on promoting ocean conservation, and he admits to being overwhelmed by the changes in the sculptures, especially in recent months. He is now in talks to create a smaller park on Carriacou, Grenada's sister island.

The sculptor summarized that he is very concerned about sea level rise, especially in some of these small island states.
