UN World Oceans Day 2024: A Global Celebration of Ocean Conservation and Photographic Excellence
The United Nations has announced the 11th Annual World Oceans Day Photo Competition, setting the stage for a global celebration of our oceans' natural beauty and the urgent need for their conservation. This year, the focus shines brightly on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), inviting photographers around the world to submit their entries by April 7th. The competition heralds an opportunity for participants to have their work featured at the SIDS4 Conference and during the live broadcast of the UN World Oceans Day on June 7, 2024.
Scheduled to take place in a hybrid format, the event will be hosted at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcast live across the globe. Under the theme "Awaken New Depths," the 2024 celebration seeks to delve into the ocean's vastness, exploring its wonders through the perspectives of global policy-makers, scientists, artists, and thought leaders. This collaborative effort is aimed at fostering a deeper connection and commitment towards oceanic conservation, promising an enriching experience for all attendees.
The photo competition, curated by Ellen Cuylaerts and evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges, presents five thematic categories: Awaken New Depths, Underwater Seascapes, Small Island Developing States, Big and Small Underwater Faces, and Above Water Seascapes. These themes are intended to inspire a wide range of interpretations and artistic visions, highlighting the critical importance of the oceans and the myriad life forms they sustain.
Winners of the competition will be announced during the UN World Oceans Day live broadcast, providing a significant platform to influence public perception and inspire actions towards ocean conservation. Notably, entries in the Small Island Developing States category will also have a chance to be showcased at the SIDS4 Conference in Antigua and Barbuda, emphasizing the pivotal role of oceans for these vulnerable communities.
As the United Nations gears up for this monumental event, the global community is invited to join in the celebration and contribute to the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve our oceans. Through the power of photography and collective action, UN World Oceans Day 2024 aims to spark a worldwide movement towards greater awareness and stewardship of the ocean's irreplaceable treasures.
