Top 10 greatest transportation innovations over the past 90 years
Other milestones include the first flight of a commercial jet airliner in 1958 and the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994.
Take a look at some of the best transportation innovations of the last 90 years," the Mirror writes. The top 30 list includes such milestones as the launch of the first satellite navigation system in 1960 and the creation of the first practical helicopter back in 1939.
The first passenger supersonic flight of the Concorde in 1976 topped the list as the greatest achievement in transportation, followed by the first commercial flight of a jet airliner in 1952.
Almost half of the innovations on the list are related to the automotive industry. As one-third of the 2,000 adults surveyed agreed that the automotive industry has undergone the most exciting changes since the 1930s, compared to railroads, aviation, and cycling.
These include the creation of the automatic transmission in 1939, self-driving cars that appeared in 1984, and the launch of the world's first mass-produced electric vehicle in 2010.
In fact, electric vehicles have been recognized as the innovation that holds the greatest promise for the UK's future sustainable development.
This study was commissioned by Nissan to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the automaker's founding.
"We've seen so much innovation that has fascinated us over the years since 1933, both on and off the road," said a company spokesperson. - "We thought it would be fun to celebrate our big birthday and close out 2023 by celebrating all the most exciting events that made the world go 'round as cars rolled off our production lines.
The 1960s were recognized as the decade that had the greatest impact on transportation innovation, with the electrification of the London Underground and the launch of the Bullet Train.
The study also found that seven out of 10 adults believe that transportation innovation has had a positive impact on their own lives. 54% say it has made their traveling easier.
For 71%, it has improved their ability to travel and commute across the country, and for three in 10, it has made it easier to stay in touch with family and friends.
Of those surveyed by OnePoll, 41% have been able to save time on their travels, and 43% can travel longer distances thanks to various innovations.
It was also found that more than a quarter (27%) are in favor of introducing artificial intelligence into the automotive industry, and 29% share the same opinion about public transportation.
And as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more and more commonplace in everyday life, Nissan used AI to imagine iconic scenes of transportation from the past - including its first-ever electric car in 1947 - and compare them to the progress of today.
Looking to the future, 69% of respondents believe that new technologies will play an important role in reducing the environmental impact of transportation in this country.
And when asked what scientific advances they would like to see most, they named delivery drones (19%), underground roads (17%) and flying cars (16%).
