The Beatles performed and filmed Help! here: Discovering the romantic ski resort of Obertauern in Austria
Oberthauern is a mecca for The Beatles fans. It was here that the Fab Four filmed scenes for their 1965 movie Help! in 1965.
Moreover, the band played their only Austrian concert (in honour of a band member's birthday) at the site of the Places Hotel when it was the Marietta Hotel. The drum kit used by Ringo Starr at the concert is on display in the corridor behind the lobby, Mail Online reports.
The Obertauern Places Hotel by Croatian brand Valamar has a funky feel with attractive after-skiing and chairlift entertainment options.
In addition to the attractively cosy bedrooms, there's a stunning underground indoor pool with giant floating beanbag furniture, a hipster lounge bar, a bustling self-service restaurant, a very fun 400 sq m (4,305 sq ft) top-floor play area with a slot machine complex. There is a rooftop bar with great views of the valley next door.
From here, you're almost guaranteed to see huge snow masses during the winter season, as Obertauern, which lies at 1,740 metres above sea level 90 km (55 miles) south of Salzburg, is the ski resort with the highest snowfall in Austria.
According to ski tourism researcher Günter Aigner, the town's average annual maximum snow depth of 264 cm has not changed in the last 108 years.
Obertauern is not the most romantic of ski resorts as it is crossed by a main road. But there's no denying that the mountains - part of the High Tauern mountain range - that rise up imperiously on either side of it are striking in their scenery.
Twenty-six cable cars and ski lifts are located around the village to create a well-designed "ski circuit" on these photogenic mountains with numerous ski bridges crossing the main road to provide connections from one side of the valley to the other. The Places Hotel is just a few metres from one of them (and offers a free shuttle service).
