Spain wants to ban short domestic flights, following France's lead
At the end of May 2023, France introduced restrictions on short domestic flights. They were replaced by trains.
Other European countries had different opinions on this initiative. Spain is considering a similar ban, according to Nation World News.
The Spanish Airlines Association, however, claims that such measures will not actually reduce CO2 emissions at all. According to its representatives, France's decision to ban short-haul flights is more of a gimmick than anything effective.
It is worth noting that measures similar to those used in France have been studied in Spain and recently proposed by United We Can as an amendment to the bill. At that time, it concerned the transport of goods and domestic flights that lasted less than four hours (compared to 2.5 hours in France).
In addition, it should be taken into account that France has an extensive network of high-speed railways, and the measure states that it will only be implemented if there is a train that "provides a satisfactory alternative service". However, this criterion will reduce the number of routes on which it can be implemented in Spain.
