Earlier today, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 traveling from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence, resulting in the death of one British passenger, Geoffrey Kitchen. The turbulence occurred while the aircraft was flying over Thai airspace, leading to numerous injuries among passengers and crew.

What Happened?

Flight SQ321 was en route from Heathrow Airport in London to Singapore Changi Airport when it hit severe turbulence. The incident has garnered significant media attention due to its severity. The flight had 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board. During the turbulence, seven people sustained critical injuries, 32 had moderate injuries, and 16 others with less severe injuries were transported to the hospital. Fourteen passengers were treated at the airport, and one person died.

Passengers recounted their harrowing experiences, describing a sudden and dramatic drop that launched unbelted passengers into the ceiling. Overhead bins were dented, and ceiling panels were damaged as people's heads hit them. Dzafran Azmir, one of the passengers, shared that the oxygen masks deployed due to the impact.

Statements on the Incident

Singapore Airlines issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to assisting passengers and crew. They are working with local authorities in Thailand to provide necessary medical aid and have sent a team to Bangkok for further support.

Boeing also expressed their condolences and offered support to Singapore Airlines. Robert Sumwalt, former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), commented on the investigation process, which will involve interviewing the crew and reviewing flight data recorder information.

The aircraft was diverted to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, where it landed safely. Some passengers had to be carried off the plane on stretchers. One passenger, Allison Barker, shared that her son sustained injuries despite wearing a seatbelt. He was among those injured during the breakfast service when the turbulence struck.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of following safety protocols, such as wearing seatbelts at all times during a flight.
