Shannon Adds Direct Frankfurt Flight With Weekly Summer Service

Shannon Airport is launching a new direct route to Frankfurt, with the first flight scheduled for 25 April 2026. The service will be operated by Discover Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, and will run once a week until 24 October. The route adds a direct connection between western Ireland and one of Europe’s main aviation hubs.
The flight takes around two hours and is timed to allow onward connections through Frankfurt later in the day. The departure from Shannon is scheduled for midday, making it possible to connect to afternoon and evening services. Through Frankfurt, passengers can continue their journey across Europe as well as to destinations in Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Airport representatives say the new route supports both tourism and business links. Germany remains an important market for Ireland, and the connection is expected to bring more visitors to the west of the country. The service also strengthens access to the Wild Atlantic Way, supporting local hotels, restaurants and attractions along the region’s coastline.
What the route connects
- Shannon: direct weekly flights to Frankfurt
- Frankfurt: onward air and rail links across Europe
- Global access: connections to Asia, Africa and the Americas
- West Ireland: easier access to coastal tourism areas
The new service reduces travel time between Ireland’s west coast and a broader range of international destinations. Cities that previously involved several connections can now be reached with a single stop in Frankfurt. It is now possible to combine Ireland with other European or long-haul destinations within one itinerary, without splitting bookings.
The route reflects how regional airports are strengthening links through major hubs rather than relying on point-to-point routes. A single weekly service may still offer broad reach when it connects into a large network. For those flying from Shannon, the addition of Frankfurt changes what is within reach and how journeys can be put together.
