Safety Alert Issued for Travelers Following Railway Vandalism in Sileby

East Midlands Railway (EMR), British Transport Police, and Network Rail have issued a warning to travelers and local residents in Sileby after a series of dangerous vandalism incidents on Thursday, 27 June. Over a period of 100 minutes, five separate incidents were reported near the village, involving smashed train windows and objects deliberately placed on the tracks.

These incidents pose significant risks not only to the staff and passengers but also to the youths involved in the trespassing. Additionally, they have caused delays and disruptions, impacting travel plans for many. With the summer holiday season approaching, authorities are urging parents to educate their children about the severe consequences of such actions.

According to Lucy Gallacher, the Emergency Planning Manager at East Midlands Railway, these reckless acts endanger lives and result in train damage, delays, and cancellations. She emphasized that measures are being taken to address the issue, but community cooperation is essential. Residents of Sileby are encouraged to report any suspicious activity near the railway to the authorities.

For travelers, these incidents highlight the importance of staying informed about potential disruptions. British Transport Police local Inspector Rich Kane emphasized that anti-social behavior on or around the rail network is not tolerated and is a priority for their enforcement efforts. The public is encouraged to report anything unusual or potentially dangerous.

Hayley Manners, Network Rail’s community safety manager in the East Midlands, noted that while Britain’s railways are among the safest globally, actions like these endanger lives. Network Rail is actively educating the public on the risks of trespass and vandalism through initiatives such as school visits, community events, and the 'You vs Train' campaign.

Incidents on Thursday, 27 June

19:00: The St Pancras to Sheffield service reported a loud bang from beneath the train, suspected to be caused by items on the track. 19:03: The Leicester to Nottingham service experienced a broken outer window due to stone-throwing. 20:10: The Sheffield to St Pancras service struck debris, including a metal road sign, on the tracks. 20:13: Upon arrival in Leicester, a broken train window was discovered, likely sustained while passing through Sileby. 20:20: Youths were seen placing objects on the track in the Sileby area, and the driver stopped to clear the debris. 20:42: The Sheffield to St Pancras service removed part of a trampoline from the tracks.

EMR and other rail services are working diligently to ensure the safety and timely travel of passengers, but vigilance and cooperation from the public are crucial in maintaining a secure travel environment.
