Ryanair Warns Travelers About High Fees on Third Party Booking Sites

According to Ryanair’s recent survey, several online travel agencies, including eDreams, Tix, and Vola, are selling flights at considerably higher prices than those available on the airline’s official website. According to the report, travelers who rely on third-party platforms frequently pay more than necessary for the same services, pointing to potential transparency issues in online booking practices.

The airline stated that these OTAs operate without any official distribution agreements yet continue to sell Ryanair’s flights independently. According to the report, this lack of cooperation allows the agencies to apply substantial markups on standard travel products, including:

  • Reserved seats,
  • Checked baggage,
  • Priority boarding.

Consequently, numerous travelers end up paying significantly more than needed when making bookings through these third-party platforms.

For passengers, this situation highlights the importance of verifying prices before confirming a booking. Although online travel agencies are seen as convenient for checking fares, the report highlights that unauthorized platforms may charge extra fees. Making reservations directly with an airline or through authorized partners ensures travelers receive clear pricing, prompt updates about travel changes, and easier access to customer support when required.

The matter has sparked new calls for enhanced consumer protection throughout Europe. Ryanair urged EU governments and regulatory bodies to introduce mandatory pricing transparency for all OTAs to help prevent misleading practices. Establishing clearer rules and standards could give travelers greater confidence when comparing fares and could reduce the risk of encountering unexpected additional charges, helping to create fairer conditions throughout the online travel market.

“Ryanair’s October OTA survey shows that eDreams, Tix & Vola continue to harm unsuspecting consumers with overcharges of almost 3 times the prices on Ryanair’s website. Despite this evidence of consumer harm, many EU Govts and Consumer Protection Authorities, most notably Spain’s useless Consumer Minister Bustinduy, do nothing to prevent this harm to thousands of Spanish consumers as a result of this overcharging."

The results act as a warning for travelers to verify prices carefully when purchasing tickets through third-party platforms. Although these services simplify booking, the prices offered do not always reflect the real expenses travelers will face. By consistently checking fares directly through official airline websites, travelers can safeguard against unnecessary costs and ensure they have a clear and complete picture of the total expenses associated with their journey.
