Ryanair has confirmed changes to its airport procedures, with stricter check-in and baggage deadlines set to come into force later this year. From 10 November, check-in and bag drop will close 60 minutes before departure, replacing the current 40-minute cut-off. The update applies across the airline’s network and mainly affects those travelling with checked luggage.

The move follows recent incidents where passengers were unable to board after delays in airport queues. In one case, a flight departed without 80 passengers who were still waiting to get through. Earlier this year, another 89 people missed a flight in Lanzarote under similar circumstances. New entry procedures in Europe, including biometric checks for UK travellers, have added pressure at some airports.

“This will allow these 20 per cent of our customers (who check in a bag) more time to clear through airport security and passport queues, and get to their departure gate on-time, especially during busy travel periods when some of these airport queues can be longer."
Dara Brady, Ryanair’s CMO

Key changes to Ryanair check-in rules

  • Check-in and bag drop close 60 minutes before departure
  • Previous cut-off was 40 minutes before departure
  • Changes mainly affect passengers with checked baggage
  • Self-service bag drop kiosks being introduced

These changes affect how people plan their time at the airport. Travelling to busy destinations may now require an earlier arrival, especially at larger airports where queues build up fast. Trips with tight schedules, like short city breaks or early flights, now require extra time before departure to avoid missing check-in or bag drop.

The new cut-off does not affect most people travelling with hand luggage, but it puts more pressure on those checking bags. Airport routines are shifting alongside longer queues and updated border checks. Delays that once felt manageable can now result in missed flights, making timing at the airport more critical than it used to be.
