Rome Lands on Salzburg’s Summer Flight Board
SkyAlps has launched a new nonstop service linking Salzburg Airport with Rome Fiumicino, adding one of Europe’s most visited capitals to the Austrian airport’s summer schedule. The first arrival was welcomed with a traditional water salute by the airport fire brigade, marking the official start of the route during rainy weather in Salzburg.
The airline will operate the service twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, until the end of October. Salzburg Airport said the chosen days are well suited to long weekends and short trips. The route is expected to serve both holidaymakers and business travellers, while strengthening tourism and economic ties between the two regions.
Airport managing director Bettina Ganghofer welcomed the launch, saying Rome offers culture, history, food and Italian atmosphere. The route has been described as one of the most requested additions to Salzburg Airport’s summer timetable. Local tourism representatives also see it as a useful link for attracting visitors from central Italy to Salzburg and SalzburgerLand.
The new flights make Rome easier to reach for travellers planning visits to the Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and Trastevere. In the other direction, Italian visitors gain simpler access to Salzburg’s old town, music heritage, mountain scenery and regional hotels, restaurants, cultural venues and leisure attractions.
The route gives Salzburg a direct link with a city that works for weekend breaks, cultural trips and business travel. It also gives Rome-based travellers a clearer path into one of Austria’s best-known regions. If demand holds through October, the service could become an important seasonal bridge for tourism in both directions.
