The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) has issued a red-level storm warning for the Epirus region, signalling the arrival of severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and possible hail as Storm Adel moves across western and northern Greece. Travellers planning to visit Epirus in the coming days may encounter quick and unpredictable changes in the weather, which can affect movement around the region, disrupt local transport or temporarily limit access to certain well known spots. The alert highlights the need for extra caution during local travel.

Forecasters expect strong wind gusts, lightning and intense rain showers throughout both coastal and mountainous parts of Epirus. Such weather can interfere with travel between different parts of the region and may slow journeys to natural sites that depend on clear and stable road conditions. Travellers could also face temporary closures of scenic routes, reduced visibility or hazards such as falling branches and hail. As the system moves across the region, its influence on travel plans and outdoor activities may become clearer, particularly in parts of Epirus that are more isolated.

Changing conditions could lead to brief disruptions throughout Epirus, especially in areas where travel depends on narrow mountain routes, steep passages or higher-altitude roads used by visitors. Heavy downpours may overwhelm drainage systems, increasing the likelihood of rapid flooding in valley areas or near coastal communities. Powerful gusts could impact ferry timetables or make driving along open coastal stretches slower, encouraging travellers to adjust their plans and factor in extra time for safe journeys.

Travellers are advised to approach outdoor activities with caution while the red alert remains in place. Footpaths, viewpoints by the sea and lakeside routes can become risky very quickly because of lightning, wet ground or unexpected bursts of wind. During unstable periods, it is wiser to focus on indoor activities like museum visits, heritage sites, or sheltered cafés and markets until the weather settles. Keeping track of weather reports and advice from local services can help travellers react in time and steer clear of avoidable risks while moving around the region.

This weather alert is a reminder that travelling through regions with varied landscapes requires a bit of flexibility and attention to what is happening around you. Unexpected changes in the weather can affect more than planned activities; they may also impact transport connections, accommodation schedules and overall comfort throughout the journey. When the weather finally settles, visitors will be able to explore Epirus at their own pace again, especially if they stay updated on local guidance and adjust plans when the situation calls for it.
