Between 5 and 24 October, train circulation in Calabria will face temporary changes as Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of Gruppo FS Italiane, carries out scheduled works. The interventions will affect the Tyrrhenian line between Vibo Pizzo and Lamezia Terme, the Tropea line, the connection from Lamezia to Catanzaro Lido, and services linking Villa San Giovanni with Melito Porto Salvo. These adjustments are required to enable infrastructure improvements along the network.

One of the most significant projects will take place on the section between Eccellente and Vibo Pizzo, where a viaduct will undergo:

  • Extraordinary maintenance,
  • Seismic reinforcement,
  • Waterproofing of the deck,
  • Demolition and reconstruction of one track.

While the works are meant to improve structural integrity and safety for the future, they will lead to temporary modifications in passenger services.

Accessing some of Calabria’s notable locations could be more complicated for travelers while the works are underway. Well-known sites such as Tropea Beach, famous for its white sand and striking cliffs, Capo Vaticano, offering sweeping coastal views, and the scenic Pizzo coastline may become less accessible by direct train during this period. Those heading to these sites may need to rely on alternative transport or allow additional travel time.

Access to other attractions could also be reduced until the works are finished. Among the notable locations along these routes are the Costa degli Dei, celebrated for its clear waters, the Riaci Rocks near Santa Domenica, popular with divers, and the Aspromonte National Park, offering a wide network of mountain trails. Since train travel is an essential part of reaching these destinations, visitors should consider any temporary service interruptions when planning their trips.

Although the changes may bring short-term challenges, the upgrades aim to enhance passenger safety and improve the resilience of the railway network. Travelers in southern Calabria will need to plan ahead during this period. When the work is finished, train services should run more reliably, providing steadier connections and highlighting the lasting benefits of the improvements.
