Portugal Strike Puts Flights at Risk

Portugal’s national strike has begun, with disruption affecting airports, rail and public transport across the country on 3 June. Rail workers, cabin crew and transport staff are taking part in the walkout, creating problems for people travelling within Portugal and those flying in or out. Around 500 flights could face cancellation or delay, according to reports.

Airlines are responding differently as the strike gets under way. More than half of the flights at risk are understood to involve TAP Air Portugal, Portugália and SATA services. TAP has said it will still operate a minimum of 79 flights and is offering alternative travel options to affected customers. Air Europa has cancelled its Madrid services involving Lisbon and Porto.

Where trips are being disrupted

The strike is affecting several parts of travel in Portugal:

  • Flights at Portuguese airports
  • TAP Air Portugal, Portugália and SATA services
  • Air Europa flights linked to Lisbon and Porto
  • Lisbon Metro services
  • Porto Metro services
  • Some journeys after 3 June

easyJet has warned of possible disruption, while Ryanair said it expects to operate normally.

The walkout could make Portugal’s main city breaks harder to manage, especially in Lisbon and Porto. Visitors with museum visits, beach plans, restaurant bookings or onward rail journeys may need more time between each step. Airport transfers could also take longer if metro services are reduced, particularly for people travelling with luggage or trying to reach early flights.

The main issue is not only whether a flight leaves, but whether the rest of the journey still works. A cancelled metro, a delayed airport transfer or a rebooked flight can easily affect hotel check-ins and short trips. Anyone travelling through Portugal on 3 June should check airline updates, airport information and local transport notices before leaving.
