Portugal has introduced a new certification to promote accessible tourism, reinforcing its position as an inclusive travel destination. Turismo de Portugal developed this initiative based on ISO 21902:2021, a global standard for accessible tourism. The certification process involves assessments by accredited organizations to ensure destinations meet accessibility criteria. By adopting these measures, Portugal aims to enhance mobility options and remove barriers for all travelers, making its tourism sector more accommodating and universally accessible.

Although participation is voluntary, the certification offers strong incentives for tourism operators to improve their services. Meeting the required accessibility standards not only enhances visitor experiences but also strengthens a business’s reputation in the growing accessible tourism market. To encourage compliance, Turismo de Portugal provides financial assistance to establishments making necessary upgrades. This support enables businesses to implement infrastructural modifications that improve accessibility while boosting their competitiveness in the industry.

For travelers with disabilities or mobility restrictions, this initiative significantly expands their options. Certified locations will provide better public transportation, accommodations with adapted facilities, and tourist attractions designed to accommodate all visitors. By ensuring accessibility, the certification fosters a more seamless and enjoyable travel experience. This is particularly important for individuals who previously faced difficulties in navigating unfamiliar destinations due to inadequate infrastructure or limited mobility support.

The accessibility improvements have more benefits than only those with disabilities. Easier exploration of Portugal' s wide range of attractions for older travelers, families with strollers and people with temporary mobility issues as well. The initiative fits with a worldwide move towards mass tourism and universal design, making Portugal a reference in the travel inclusive potential. This way, it captures a wider audience and reinforces the country brand as a country that celebrates all its visitors.

Portugal's advocacy for accessibility by-and-large demonstrates a new way of tourism development. This not only elevates the travel experience for so many in the country but also establishes a blueprint for other destinations around the world to follow by prioritizing inclusivity. This initiative underscores the importance of accessible tourism in shaping a more equitable and welcoming travel industry.
