For a refreshing alternative to the sweltering summer heat of the Mediterranean, consider the Tyrolean Alps in Austria's Stubai Valley. Known for its stunning mountain scenery, the region offers a wealth of activities for families looking to escape the heat and enjoy the great outdoors.

The Tyrolean Alps span more than 9,500 square miles in western Austria and are famous for winter sports. However, during the warmer months, the region transforms into a haven for walkers, cyclists, and active travelers. With the Mediterranean experiencing extreme summer temperatures, the Tyrolean Alps provide a cool and exciting holiday destination for families.

The Stubai Valley, or Stubaital, is a perfect base for family adventures. Located just nine miles south of Innsbruck, the valley features traditional alpine charm with cowbells, wildflowers, and endless outdoor activities. The main road through the valley is well-served by buses, and accommodation ranges from traditional hotels to holiday apartments, particularly in the spire-dotted town of Neustift im Stubaital.

Valley Views on Foot

The Stubai Valley offers a network of waymarked hiking trails suitable for all ages. From challenging high-altitude scrambles to easy adventure trails, there is something for everyone. Four cable-car lines provide access to the mountains, leading to scenic footpaths and breathtaking views. For an easy hike, try the 1.5-mile route from the Elfer cable-car to the Autenalm mountain restaurant. Alternatively, the new five-mile Sunnenseit’n Weg circular path offers stunning views and a 360ft-long suspension bridge.

A more challenging option starts at the Grawa Waterfall. The 1.6-mile trail ascends through the woods to the Sulzenau Alm, where cold drinks and apple strudel await.

E-Biking the Alps

Cycling is another fantastic way to explore the valley. Families can enjoy level paths leading to Kids Park Klaus Äuele, featuring a ropes course, climbing walls, and a lake. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the Elfer cable-car offers two downhill trails. For a more strenuous ride, head to the remote Oberissalm mountain hut for spectacular views and local dishes like käsespätzle.

Many hotels offer free guest bicycles, but renting e-bikes can help with the valley's hills and distances. Intersport in Neustift im Stubaital offers e-bike rentals for around €45 (£39) per adult and €35 (£30) for kids.

Alternative Thrills

The Miederer summer toboggan run provides a thrilling 1.7-mile sled descent suitable for all ages. The StuBay water park features water slides and pools, both indoor and outdoor. For a unique perspective, adventurous kids can try tandem paragliding flights over the Alps.

The Stubai Glacier, accessible via a dedicated cable-car, offers stunning views from the 10,530ft Top of Tyrol platform, overlooking over 100 peaks.

Adding on a City Break

Just 15 miles from Neustift im Stubaital, the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck is worth a visit. The 590 bus provides direct access to the city's historical Old Town and cafes. For rainy days, the Flip Lab trampoline park on the city outskirts offers family-friendly entertainment.
