Palermo Airport Opens 24-Hour Pet Area Near Terminal

Falcone Borsellino Airport in Palermo has opened a 24-hour pet area covering about 350 square metres for passengers travelling with animals. The space is located outside the terminal close to the departure level, allowing easy access before entering the airport. The project is part of measures introduced by airport operator Gesap to expand available services and respond to the growing number of people travelling with pets.
The fenced area has plants, water fountains, waste bins and benches, giving animals a place to settle before the flight. It is located next to the terminal, so it can be reached easily without moving far from the departure area. The space can also be used by people travelling with assistance dogs or by those meeting or accompanying passengers who arrive with pets.
Palermo Airport is currently the only airport in southern Italy offering a dedicated pet area of this kind and becomes the sixth airport in the country to introduce the service, following Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, Cagliari and Olbia. Studies suggest that a significant share of pet owners prefer to travel with animals, although some still face limitations depending on available facilities and destination policies.
What the Pet Area Includes
- Fenced outdoor zone near departures level
- Water fountains with integrated bowls
- Waste bins with hygiene bag dispensers
- Benches for owners waiting with pets
- Landscaping with Mediterranean plants
The addition of pet-friendly infrastructure may support travel planning for those wishing to explore Sicily with animals, including visits to Palermo’s historic centre, coastal areas such as Mondello beach or routes connecting the city with other destinations across the island. Improved airport services may make it easier to organise trips that include pets, especially on journeys involving longer distances.
The new pet area shows how airports are adjusting services for people who travel with animals. Having a suitable space for pets can affect destination choices when planning holidays or family visits. As more airports add similar facilities, travelling with animals may become easier, as passengers can rely on designated areas where pets can rest before the flight.
