easyJet is preparing to launch a new operational base at Newcastle Airport in March 2026. The airline plans to station three aircraft on site, creating what will become its eleventh UK base. Around 1200 jobs across the country are expected to be supported, spanning roles for pilots, engineers and cabin crew. This move follows previous network expansions focused on Birmingham and Southend during the past two years.

The decision to expand operations in Newcastle reflects changes in travel demand from the North East. Having planes based right at Newcastle makes it easier to tweak flight times and even add new destinations if needed. As a result, passengers departing from Newcastle may see broader access to short-haul destinations and more varied departure times without needing to travel via southern airports.

From Newcastle, travellers can fly to Amsterdam, where many choose to visit the Anne Frank House, a preserved hiding place from the Second World War. Geneva is another destination, best known for its Jet d’Eau fountain, which shoots water high into the air and can be seen from much of the city. It’s easy to get from the airport into town in both places, and once you’re there, most things worth seeing are close together and easy to reach.

In Palma de Mallorca, one of the most prominent landmarks is the Gothic-style La Seu Cathedral, located near the waterfront. Paris is within easy reach too, and many visitors stop by the Louvre, a massive museum that houses the Mona Lisa and plenty more to explore. With the new base in place, flights to these cities might run more often or at different times, giving travellers more options to choose what works best for them.

This move points to a bigger change in how people in the North of England catch flights, with more happening close to home instead of far-off airports. With more planes flying straight to Europe from Newcastle, travellers might skip the hassle of trekking to huge airports miles away. This change could lead to new travel habits and encourage more use of regional airports as departure points for international trips.
