Night Flight Limits Set During Hannover Runway Upgrade

Hannover Airport will temporarily close its northern runway between 31 March and 30 May 2026 as part of a long-term modernisation programme that aims to maintain the airport’s operational capacity for the future. The works include construction of a second technical station building with integrated supply systems. The project forms part of a wider upgrade scheduled to continue in several phases until completion in 2033.
The northern runway has been in service for around 60 years and requires extensive renewal beyond routine maintenance. The wider programme includes improvements to drainage infrastructure, airfield lighting systems and energy supply facilities. Initial preparatory works began earlier with the construction of a new station building. Further stages are planned for 2027 and 2028, when the first main construction phase will take place in the eastern section of the runway.
During the closure period, all flights will operate via the southern runway. To balance the impact on nearby residential areas, night flights on the southern runway will be restricted in June and July 2026. The construction schedule has been coordinated with the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, with the aim of keeping airport operations running while limiting disruption for both residents and airlines.
For people planning trips through Hannover, flight schedules may change slightly during spring and early summer 2026. Airlines may adjust departure times or aircraft rotations as traffic is concentrated on a single runway. Short overnight connections could become less available during the period of night restrictions, particularly in June and July, when quieter hours are introduced for nearby communities.
The works reflect a longer-term effort to maintain reliable airport infrastructure while preparing for future air traffic demand. Although temporary operational adjustments are expected, flights will continue throughout the construction period. Looking at the timetable shortly before departure can help avoid surprises, especially when travelling early in the morning or late in the evening during the period of runway works.
