New York-JFK Airport’s AirTrain Fares Slashed Amid Peak Summer Travel
New York City's public transit AirTrain, which connects the city to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), is reducing its prices for the summer to encourage more passengers to take the train.

From July 1st to September 2nd, 2024, AirTrain single-ride fares will be cut by 50%, dropping from $8.50 to $4.25. This initiative aims to increase public transport usage and alleviate airport traffic congestion during the busiest travel season. The price cut is part of an effort by New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York’s Port Authority to improve travel experiences amid extensive construction at JFK.
Governor Hochul emphasized the benefits of the AirTrain during this period, stating, "With transformational construction underway at JFK, we’re taking steps to mitigate travel delays and affirm what’s always been true – there’s no better option than taking the train to the plane. As we kick off a busy summer, we’re making it more affordable for travelers to utilize the AirTrain, offering New Yorkers and visitors from around the world the best-in-class travel experience they deserve."
Impact of JFK's Transformation Project
JFK is currently undergoing a $19 billion transformation project that includes constructing new terminals, a ground transportation center, and a revamped roadway network. This summer, construction will intensify, creating significant operational strains. Encouraging the use of the AirTrain is seen as a vital measure to manage the expected increase in traffic.
Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton highlighted the significance of the project, noting, "The historic, once-in-a-generation $19 billion transformation of JFK is gaining momentum by the day. We are entering our peak construction period while managing record passenger volumes, so traffic at the airport this summer will be very congested. When coming to or leaving the airport, we cannot more strongly recommend that travelers use the multitude of train and subway options that are reliably available."
Details on AirTrain Fare Reduction
The fare reduction applies exclusively to the single-ride fare. The existing discounted 10-trip and 30-day unlimited fares, which cost $26.50 and $42.50 respectively, remain unchanged. The reduced fare is available at both off-airport stations: Jamaica and Howard Beach. These stations are conveniently located for passengers traveling from various parts of New York City, including Grand Central Madison Station and Penn Station, as well as Long Island.
JFK's Ongoing Construction Efforts
The $19 billion renovation project at JFK includes the development of a new Terminal One and Terminal Six, alongside significant upgrades to the airport’s ground transportation and roadway networks. The new roadway will feature six miles of new roads, fewer driver decision points, and signaled intersections to reduce traffic congestion. The overall cost for the roadway network and ground transportation improvements is estimated at $1.24 billion.
This extensive project aims to enhance JFK's infrastructure and improve the travel experience for millions of passengers. With an expected additional 700,000 passengers this summer, these measures are crucial to managing the increased traffic and ensuring smooth airport operations.
