New Terminal in Malé Promises Smoother Journeys for Maldives Travelers

beOnd, known as the world’s first airline focused only on premium leisure travel, started flights from the newly opened Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport on August 16, 2025. It became the first premium carrier to operate passenger flights from Europe and the GCC into the new terminal. The event highlights the airline’s global growth and the Maldives’ plan to handle more long-distance travelers while improving its airport facilities.
The opening of Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport is intended to meet rising international passenger demand and boost overall efficiency. Built to align with modern aviation requirements, the terminal provides expanded spaces and streamlined security procedures. For airlines such as beOnd, moving to the new terminal helps them run services more smoothly. For airport authorities, it is an important step in preparing for the steady increase in visitors coming to the Maldives.
The Maldives is at the heart of our story, and it is only fitting that we are the first premium airline to welcome guests from Europe and the GCC to this beautiful new terminal. A new home that reflects our commitment to delivering a seamless, luxurious experience from start to finish, from the moment our guests arrive at the airport until they reach their destination.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the new terminal increases access to Malé’s most notable cultural attractions. Travelers can now more easily explore landmarks such as Sultan Park, a historic green space within the capital, or the National Museum, which preserves artefacts from the Maldives’ royal past. The smoother airport procedures reduce the time spent in transit, allowing passengers to engage with the city’s cultural identity almost immediately after landing. This closer connection between travel and exploration reinforces the Maldives as more than just a beach destination.
Equally important, the simplified arrival process creates stronger links to world famous resorts scattered across the atolls. High end retreats such as Patina, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, or JW Marriott can now be reached more efficiently, as reduced waiting times at the airport shorten onward transfers by speedboat or seaplane. For luxury tourists, this means the journey from plane to private villa becomes less stressful and more efficient, ensuring their holiday begins the moment they set foot on Maldivian soil rather than after hours of waiting.
beOnd’s move to Terminal 1 is more than just changing terminals, it signals a fresh way of delivering premium tourism in the Maldives. Passengers now arrive at an airport that shows the same level of care and quality as the islands they are here to experience. This marks the start of a new era in Maldivian tourism, where the arrival experience highlights the country’s natural beauty and ensures the journey is easy, pleasant, and closely tied to the spirit of leisure travel.
