Medical Emergency Forces El Al Flight to Divert to Turkey Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
An El Al flight from Warsaw to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Antalya, Turkey, on Sunday due to a passenger experiencing a medical crisis. The pilot of El Al flight LY5102, after consulting with an onboard doctor, decided on an urgent landing to ensure the passenger received immediate hospital care.
Following the emergency landing, the situation became complicated due to ongoing diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey. Since the October 7 massacre by Hamas, direct flights between the two countries have been suspended. Passengers were not allowed to disembark, and Turkish authorities initially refused permission for the plane to refuel for its return to Israel.
El Al faced significant delays because they lacked the necessary refueling permits, and local workers also refused to refuel the aircraft. This standoff persisted for several hours, exacerbating an already tense situation.
Despite these challenges, the plane had enough fuel to reach Rhodes, Greece, which is approximately 155 miles away. Passengers endured an extended journey, spending over 11 hours on a flight originally scheduled to last just 3 hours and 40 minutes.
